There can be a massive stigma around the cost of wellbeing and a general feeling that living a healthy lifestyle comes with a hefty price tag. However, it is possible to eat clean, make the most of your workout and consequently, feel ace, all on a budget.
I'll be doing a few more posts around the subject of living well on a budget, but to kick things off, I've done a round-up on some my top tips for budget wellbeing, in and around the beautiful Newcastle upon Tyne area.
Convenient clean eats
Up until around a year ago, yeah there were a few veggie/vegan/healthy eating cafes in Newcastle, but nothing quite like Naked Deli. In the heart of Heaton, they specialise in clean, paleo food and have a cracker of a menu; smoothies, juices, bulletproof coffee, homemade protein balls, flapjacks, the best steak and eggs, ridiculously colourful salads...the list goes on. A few things may be a little bit on the pricey side, but the treats you can pick up on the counter are really affordable, and all made fresh everyday. Win.
Pound the paths
You definitely don't need a gym to keep well and active in the Toon. With the incredible scenery of the Quayside and Jesmond Dene, both just a stone's throw from the city centre, running around Newcastle is always more of a pleasure than a chore. If you're feeling competitive, parkrun takes place on Saturday mornings in Exhibition Park, a 5 minute walk from the Haymarket or Jesmond. It's an absolutely free of charge timed 5K race, so perfect to get those legs going and start the weekend right, all for free.
Grainger Market
Right in the heart of town is the mecca that is the Grainger Market. They have a huge selection of fruit and veg at bargain prices. Head here to keep your fridge stocked with leafy greens and berries for your post-workout protein smoothies at prices that won't break the bank.
Go Coastal
If you're living in Newcastle, you're literally 20 minutes away from the gorgeousness of the North Tyneside coastline. Granted I may be a tiny bit bias as I live at the coast (whattup, Tynemouth), but this is seriously one of the best coastlines, with Longsands and King Edward's Bay being two of the most beautiful (and cleanest!) beaches in the UK.
Longsands is a superb surf spot - you can hire surf boards, wet suits etc from Longsands Surf School for a low cost, so if you're interested in wrestling with the waves, this is the spot for you. Into more functional and body weight fitness? David Fairlamb's Beach Bootcamp takes place early doors during the week, and on weekend mornings at 9am. It's only £5 a session for a 45 minute workout on the sand. There we gan. A few tips to get you started if you're trying to make your lifestyle a bit cleaner, but don't want to foot an expensive gym bill. Or you might have just moved to the Newcastle area, and want to know how to can keep your health in check. If you have anymore tips for budget wellbeing in Newcastle, or the wider North East, keep me informed, please.
What are your top tips for wellbeing on a budget? I'd love to hear your suggestions.
